Lyle, it depends very much on what you want to achieve. North light has been used for a long time to provide consistent, neutral lighting for artists' studios without adding heat to usually small spaces. If you want thermal loading, then south, south-east or south-west orientation would be preferred. I worked in an office building at 55 degrees north in Canada with a sloped glass wall oriented soutnwest. One day in tne winter, a sunny day, we experienced a power outage, The offices ajoining the glass wall overheated in short order, the offices in the northwest side cooled rapidly. This was in January, ambient temperature outside was about -35 C.
